The World Bank Group Senior Vise president and Group General Counsel, Dr. Sandie Okoro, is scheduled to arrive in Tanzania today for a nine-day mission.
Dr. Okoro’s mission is anticipated to enable her to learn how the World Bank-financed and supported programmes and projects, such as the ones covering governance and justice sectors, were progressing in the country.
She will also meet the Chief Justice, Professor Ibrahim Hamis Juma, Finance and Planning Minister Dr. Phillip Mpango and other senior government officials.
It will also give her the opportunity to learn how the bank’s recently decentralized legal services were working and how they could better support government’s bank programmes.
The World Bank boss would participate in roundtable discussions that will bring together various justice sector civil society representatives and other stakeholders to deliberate on issues relating to Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in the country and explore innovative legal approaches and gender-specific strategies to fighting it.
She is also expected to participate at the ‘Girls in Action Initiative Conference’ in Dar es Salaam, which will bring together Tanzanian students in higher learning institutions under the theme: “Young Women and their place in Modern Economy.”
Dr. Okoro will then travel to Arusha where she would co-host (with Prof. Ibrahim Juma) a high-level conference on Gender and the Judiciary in Sub-Saharan Africa from June 10th to 14th.
The meeting will be attended by chief justices from across the African continent, judges, magistrates and concerned stakeholders to discuss gender issues within the judiciary, women’s access to justice and GBV.
