Zanzibar government has been requested to purchase more farm inputs, including ploughs and harrowing tractors if they want farmers to increase production.
Debating the 2018/2019 budget proposal for the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources, Livestock, and Fisheries, backbenchers said without enough supply of farming equipment it will be difficult to achieve the goals.
Speaking on the behalf of Finance, Trade and Agriculture, House of Representatives standing committee, Ms. Hamida Abdalla Issa (CCM – Women special seats) said despite recent purchase of 20 tractors and additional ten donated by Libya Government, there was still a shortage.
“Farmers need at least 80 working tractors to respond to the need,” said Ms. Issa after the Minister for Agriculture, Natural Resources, Livestock and Fisheries, Mr. Rashid Ali Juma unveiled the 62.6bn/- TZS budget approval.
Mr. Juma said that more tractors are in the offing as the government has entered into an agreement with Mahindra Company to Manufacture 100 tractors for Zanzibar so that the shortage can be minimized.
